Take your steroids exactly as your health professional has told you. Steroids that are injected into a blood vessel (intravenous steroids) may cause more widespread side effects. Steroids also reduce the activity of the immune system, which is the body’s natural defence against illness and infection.

Side effects of steroid injections

However, these should be used with caution in people with ongoing infections, like tuberculosis (TB). This can help treat autoimmune conditions, such as rheumatoid arthritis or lupus, which are caused by the immune system mistakenly attacking the body. If you develop adrenal crisis, your doctors give you an injection of extra steroid medication, to help bring the steroid level within your body back up to a safe level. Other types of steroids are sex steroids (oestrogen, progesterone and testosterone) and anabolic steroids. You may be given a special steroid treatment card that explains how you can reduce the risk of side effects.

Can I take other medicines along with steroids?

We’ll arrange for a blood test to check your child’s antibodies to chicken pox and your child may need an injection to protect them, but your doctor or nurse will talk through this with you. Taking steroid tablets for a long time can make you more likely to get infections. If you feel feverish or unwell, or develop any new symptoms after starting steroids, it’s important to tell your doctor or rheumatology nurse. Patients should be co-prescribed calcium and vitamin D to prevent corticosteroid induced bone loss[16] and counselled on the risk secondary adrenal insufficiency and adrenal crisis on omission of steroids.
